2ND (NI) BATTALION ARMY CADETS TUNE IN TO EXERCISE SUMMER WHINE

23 June 2015

Exercise SUMMER WHINE is the annual 24-hour operating competition for cadet stations on the CCF/ACF National Radio Network (NRN).  The aim of this exercise is for cadets to operate issued military radio equipment for a continuous period of 24 hours under field conditions, away from the normal operating base, using equipment run entirely from batteries.

The 2nd (NI) Battalion cadets set up camp at Ballykinler to take part in the competition.  The tasks included setting up, tuning and using a PRC320 HF radio net; establishing communications with all other cadet teams on the net and sending and receiving simple messages accurately using correct military voice procedure.

Despite the lack of sleep, the cadets thoroughly enjoyed the experience and entered into the spirit of the competition.
