Reserve Forces & Cadets Association
Northern Ireland

EMPLOYER SUPPORT

Reservists could not carry out their important role and train to the high standards of professionalism required without the full co-operation of their employers.

All members of the Reserve Forces undergo rigorous training which develops valuable skills such as leadership, teamwork, effective communication and organisational ability. This can lead to improved performance in the workplace, with transferable attributes that include the ability to work under pressure, reliability, self-confidence and a determination to succeed.

Defence Relationship Management (DRM)

DRM is a single point of contact linking employers with the Ministry of Defence (MOD).
DRM offers advice and support on employing members of the armed forces community and enables organisations to develop a mutually beneficial working relationship with the MOD.
DRM builds on the successful SaBRE (Supporting Britain’s Reservists and their Employers) information campaign and continues Defence’s work with reservists, their employers, and those organisations who want to partner with defence.

Regional Support

Within each region a Regional Employer Engagement Director (REED) – formerly known as the Regional SaBRE* Campaign Director (RSCD) – is appointed to provide Employer Support and Employer Engagement.

Please contact the Northern Ireland REED for any advice, guidance or support.

Supportive Employers

A large part of the DRM role is about recognising employers who are supportive of Reservist employees. If you wish to register your organisations' support of the Reserve Forces please contact us. There are currently over 700 supportive employers in Northern Ireland.

Employer events

Every year the NI REED runs events for employers that are designed to either inform and brief on a particular subject, or thank them for their support. Events are free to attend and are open to any employer. Previous events to which Northern Ireland employers have been invited include:

Royal Gun Salutes at Hillsborough Castle
Royal Marine Reserves carrying out arctic training in Norway
Employers Abroad Visits to Cyprus and Denmark
Beating the Retreats
Ships visits
Reserve capability demonstrations

If you employ Reservists and would like the opportunity to attend an event or a UK briefing day to learn more about the Reserve Forces and the ways in which DRM can help employers of Reservists, please contact us.

* The creation of DRM to develop mutually beneficial relationships with national employers has subsumed SaBRE’s employer support functions; therefore the decision has been taken to phase out the SaBRE brand.  This does not affect the service being delivered to employers or Reservists and the team in Northern Ireland has not changed – it is just now operating as part of DRM.
