NORTHERN IRELAND VETERANS' SUPPORT OFFICE – DEFENCE GARDENS SCHEME (DGS) REGIONAL COORDINATOR

A vacancy has arisen for a Defence Gardens Scheme Regional Coordinator within the Veterans’ Support Office NI (VSONI).

This post is based in Belfast and the successful candidate will be expected to reside within daily travelling distance.  

The Defence Gardens Scheme (DGS) is an established nature-based therapy provision for military personnel; veterans, service leavers and families, that is currently operating at 3 Hub gardens in Northern Ireland. One example of the service provision can be seen at:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part- time DGS regional co-ordinator (3 days a week, 30 weeks per year (term-time)) who will oversee the delivery of the DGS interventions at the 3 gardens but importantly be instrumental in identifying and establishing 3 Spoke gardens to each of the established Hubs ( that is a total of 9 new sites).  The Spoke gardens will be community based and located within easy travelling distance of each of the 3 Hubs- that is Lisburn, Coleraine and Enniskillen.

The successful applicant will be on a fixed contract that runs to 31st January 2022, at which point the funding will be reviewed. The post holder will be required to work a 25 hour week (includes lunchbreaks – 22 hour net).  The post holder will report to the Chief Executive of the NI Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA NI) through the Head of the NVSO, although funding for the post is provided through an Armed Forces Covenant Fund Grant.  

The successful candidate will be a motivated individual with good communication skills and an interest in nature-based therapy (though no detailed knowledge is required). 

The salary for the appointment is £9,454 per annum. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to auto-enrol in a free-standing pension scheme. Holiday entitlement will be 8.5 days plus 3 public holidays.
The appointment is for a probationary period of 6 months in the first instance.
